Pushing the door of the Bazalte workshop means entering the universe of a passionate craftswoman. At the Aldatu Centre, just a stone's throw from Hasparren's centre, Gaëlle Couleard laid down his tools and his know-how as a maroquinière to give life to a brand in his image: demanding, local and deeply attached to well-made leather.
Here, everything is thought and made on site. Handbags, pouches, belts, wallets, card holders, bags: each piece is designed and crafted by hand in small series. No mass production, no shortcuts. Just a patient work, neat seams and a real attention to finishing — those that are sometimes noticed only after several months of use, when leather begins to tell its own story.
Leather, carefully chosen
What distinguishes Bazalte is also the traceability of the material. Gaëlle obtained short circuit supplies from French tanneries of excellence: the Rémy Carriat tannery in Espelette (one of the last independent tanneries in France, labeled EPV), the Garat tannery, a Basque family-owned company for six generations, and the Alran magisserie in the Tarn, which had continued its know-how since 1903. Leathers of character, thought to embellish with time.
Between heritage and modernity
The Bazalte creations assume a timeless design but do not crush the color. The lines are clear, the models designed to last, for both men and women. In each room we feel this dialogue between a solid artisanal tradition and a resolutely contemporary look.
More than a shop, a living workshop
Bazalte is also a place where you can order a custom-made creation, customize an existing model, or even put your own hand to the dough during DIY workshops of initiation to leather goods: leave with your own pouch, bracelet or leather accessory made with your hands, accompanied by a generous artisan with her knowledge.
As fast fashion gets us used to the ephemeral, Bazalte reminds us that a beautiful bag is first of all an object that we keep — and that we transmit.
